Restorative dentistry repairs teeth damaged by decay, infection, or fracture — ranging from simple fillings, to root canal treatment for infected tooth pulp, to crowns that rebuild and protect a weakened tooth. The goal is to save and restore the natural tooth wherever possible.
Signs You May Need This
- A cavity found during a checkup, or a visible hole or dark spot on a tooth
- Toothache, especially lingering pain after hot or cold, or pain when biting
- Swelling, a pimple-like bump on the gum, or a bad taste — possible signs of infection that may need root canal treatment
- A tooth that's cracked, heavily filled, or weakened and at risk of breaking further
What Happens During Treatment
- 1Examination and X-rays to assess the extent of decay or infection
- 2Local anaesthesia to numb the tooth and surrounding area
- 3Fillings: decayed tissue is removed and the cavity is cleaned and filled with tooth-coloured composite material
- 4Root canal treatment: infected or inflamed pulp is removed from inside the tooth, the canals are cleaned and shaped, then sealed; a crown is usually recommended afterward to protect the tooth
- 5Crowns: the tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken, and a custom crown is fitted — often over two visits, with a temporary crown worn in between
What's Included
- Tooth-coloured composite fillings
- Root canal treatment to save infected teeth
- Custom-made dental crowns
- Procedures performed with anaesthesia for comfort
Aftercare
- Numbness from local anaesthesia wears off within a few hours — avoid chewing until sensation returns, to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue
- Some sensitivity to pressure or temperature for a few days after a filling or root canal is common and usually settles
- Avoid chewing on a tooth that has just had root canal treatment until the permanent crown is placed, as it can be more prone to fracture in the meantime
- Take any prescribed pain relief or antibiotics as directed, and keep the follow-up appointment if a crown is planned
- Contact the clinic if pain is severe, worsening, or swelling develops
Don't leave a painful or decayed tooth untreated — restorative treatment can relieve pain and often save a tooth that might otherwise need extraction. Come in for an examination as early as possible.
