Emergency Types & First Aid
Severe Toothache
Symptoms:
- Persistent throbbing pain
- Swelling of gums or face
- Fever
First Aid:
- Take pain relief medication (paracetamol)
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Apply a cold compress to the cheek
- Avoid hot/cold food and drinks
Broken / Knocked-Out Tooth
Symptoms:
- Tooth broken due to trauma
- Tooth completely knocked out
- Bleeding from the socket
First Aid:
- Find the tooth fragment if possible
- Store the tooth in milk or saliva
- Press the wound with a clean cloth
- Go to the clinic IMMEDIATELY within 30 minutes
Gum Bleeding
Symptoms:
- Continuous bleeding after extraction
- Gums bleeding for no reason
- Bleeding that won't stop
First Aid:
- Apply pressure with sterile gauze for 20 minutes
- Do not rinse or spit
- Do not drink through a straw
- Contact the clinic if bleeding doesn't stop
Dental Abscess
Symptoms:
- Severe swelling of gums/face
- High fever
- Difficulty swallowing/breathing
First Aid:
- THIS IS AN EMERGENCY — Contact us immediately
- Do not try to burst the abscess
- Rinse with salt water
- Go to the hospital if breathing is difficult
Loose Braces Bracket
Symptoms:
- Loose or detached bracket
- Wire poking cheek/gums
- Mouth discomfort
First Aid:
- Apply orthodontic wax to the bracket
- Clip the wire with sterile nail clippers if needed
- Rinse with salt water
- Schedule an appointment within 1-2 days
Lost Filling
Symptoms:
- Filling has fallen out
- Exposed hole in the tooth
- Sensitivity to food/drink
First Aid:
- Keep the filling if you find it
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Use sugar-free gum as a temporary cover
- Schedule an appointment within a few days

- Go to the nearest hospital Emergency Department (A&E) for serious cases
